Volobe Hydropower Plant: A Milestone in Madagascar’s Energy Transition

A high priority in Madagascar’s national development program, Volobe hydroelectric power plant seeks to provide reliable and affordable access to electricity for over two million Malagasy, thus contributing to the country’s transition towards renewable energy.

Volobe which is to be built on the river Ivondro on the island of Madagascar is designed to generate an average annual output of 750 GWh, equivalent to the electricity supply of more than 360 000 households, upon its scheduled commissioning in 2023. The construction is due to start by mid-2021.

Tractebel leads from preparation of the construction contracts, among other administrative documents, the management of the prequalification and tendering phases, that include:

  • Optimization of various project components (roads, dam, powerhouse, tunnels, transmission line, among other)
  • Preparation of Geological Baseline Report (GBR)
  • Creation of the construction contract for the various work packages
  • Assistance to the project owner for the prequalification of contractors
  • Assisting the project owner during the tendering process
  • Rolling out the dam break study

We take pride to see our engineering solutions for the implementation and operation of water infrastructures enabling millions of people with access to clean, reliable and affordable energy.
