Elmina Fishing Port: Boosting the Fishing Industry in Ghana

The Elmina fishing port rehabilitation and expansion has been signed off by the government of Ghana in July 2020, the project is aimed to enhancing the fishing industry and safeguard the future fishing of the region.

Besides tourism, the main economic activity of Elmina is fishing with about 60% of the nation's annual animal protein is derived from fishing, and fishing employs about 20% of the nation's work force.

The Project will undertake the upgrading of existing facilities such as administration building, the slipways, workshop and maintenance dredging of the existing Port.

When completed, the project would expand the port entrance to welcome larger vessels and canoes and generally provide new modern facilities of international standards for port operations.

Tractebel expertise in this project include:

  • Site investigations and measurements
  • Wave and Morphological modelling and supervision of physical modelling of the port
  • Sedimentation and dredging assessment: Port and access channels
  • Port layout
  • Concept and detailed design (breakwaters, quays, moorings, fenders etc.) including preparation of Basis of Design, construction drawings and specifications
  • Value engineering and design verification during execution
  • Site supervision

Once again we witness how engineering solutions undoubtedly play an integral role in ensuring a secure food supply.
